I begin all of my classes with meditation, and often, a free-write afterwards. I’ve been doing this for over 15 years. I found it helpful when I coached boxing, when I ran an herbalism school, when I offer retreats and when I facilitate writing courses. The intention is to help students transition from one state of being to another. To help them drop into their bodies and notice their breath. To bring them into a state of presence where they get the most out of our time together. And most importantly, where they can more easily access their innate wisdom.
I just finished a one-on-one session with a student and friend I’ve been working with for years. She was having a particularly bad day, so she asked if we could begin with a meditation and free-write like we do in our online writing workshops. We did, and shifted things for her. That shift inspired me to record a brief meditation and share it here with you here:
If you have time after listening, I encourage you to free-write. Put your pen to the page and write any and everything that comes up for you, no editing. Free-writing can be a cathartic practice and I’m always moved by the gorgeous writing that emerges when we allow ourselves to relax… and let go.
