I begin all of my classes with meditation, and often, a free-write afterwards. I’ve been doing this for over 15 years. I did it when I taught boxing, when I ran an herbalism school, when I offered retreats and now, when I facilitate writing courses. I offer this to help students transition from one state of being to another. To help them drop into their bodies and notice their breath. To bring them into a state of presence where they get the most out of our time together. And most importantly, where they can more easily access their innate wisdom.
I just finished a session with a student and friend I’ve been working with for years. She asked that we begin our meeting with a meditation and free-write like we do with the online writing workshops. We did, and after having a particularly bad day, it shifted things for her. That shift inspired me to record a brief meditation and share it here with you here:
This is an invitation to drop into your body and breath while engaging your imagination. Together, we’ll get quiet and travel somewhere in nature to connect to Earth. What comes up is always interesting to note. If you have time afterward, I encourage you to free-write; put your pen to the page and write any and everything that comes up for you, no editing. Free-writing can be a cathartic practice and I’m always moved by the gorgeous writing that emerges when we allow ourselves to relax… and let go.
