Reclaim Wildness Through Writing & So-called Weeds
A new article and online herbalism course
Have you ever noticed a dandelion pushing through a crack in the sidewalk and seen not a weed or even a wildflower, but a testament to nature's resilience? Everyday encounters with common plants can spark connections that transcend mere observation. By translating these experiences into writing and herbalism, we explore the idea that we are not separate from nature, but rather part of life's intricate web. Focusing on common plants allows us to capture the extraordinary within the so-called ordinary, crafting herbal remedies and weaving tales that celebrate our inner and outer wilds.
Plant blindness, the tendency to overlook the common flora around us, is a significant barrier to reconnecting with the natural world. Yet, in these everyday encounters with so-called weeds lies an opportunity to rediscover the wildness woven into the fabric of our lives.
For my recent article in Atlas Obscura, "How to Reconnect With Nature Through Writing" I delved into the transformative power of translating our experiences with nature into words. By slowing down, sharpening our senses, and observing the intricate details of common plants, we can cultivate a deeper appreciation for the living world around us.
This focus becomes especially intimate in my online course that begins on Tuesday. We'll explore the concept of "weeds" not as invaders, but as powerful allies. Throughout the four sessions, we'll learn to identify these tenacious plants, discover their medicinal properties, and craft teas and tinctures using ethical wildcrafting practices. I’d love to see you there.
Whether you're drawn to the beauty of a dandelion or the medicinal potential of mugwort, reconnecting with nature starts with a shift in perspective. Writing and ethical wildcrafting offer tools to cultivate this new way of seeing – one that celebrates the wildness present in our everyday lives.

I love seeing 'weeds' appearing through cracks in pavements or walls, these signs of nature's resilience always give me hope.
